Veterinary endoscopy
Veterinary endoscopy is an external service provided at Badavet with the collaboration of Joan Quesada, for the internal examination of your pet when the Badavet team considers it necessary.
What we treat
Veterinary endoscopy allows the inside of your pet’s digestive or respiratory tract to be examined with a camera, providing information that helps the veterinary team assess each case.
This service is provided at Badavet by Joan Quesada, an external veterinarian who visits the clinic to carry out the procedure when the Badavet team considers it appropriate. Appointment requests are always handled by Badavet.
Endoscopy allows us to look inside the body without opening it: a very thin camera is introduced through a natural opening, showing the inside of the oesophagus, stomach, airways or ears directly. Where an X-ray shows shadows, endoscopy shows the lining as it really is.
Its most common use is twofold: reaching a diagnosis when other tests do not settle it — chronic vomiting, persistent coughing, difficulty swallowing — and removing swallowed foreign bodies without resorting to abdominal surgery. It also allows targeted biopsies, seeing exactly where the sample is taken from.
When it may be recommended
The Badavet veterinary team may suggest an endoscopy, among other reasons, when there is:
Repeated vomiting or digestive issues with no clear cause.
Suspicion of a swallowed foreign object.
Persistent coughing or breathing difficulty that needs further information.
A need to take an internal sample to complete a diagnosis.
Repeated vomiting with no clear cause.
Difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, or coughing after eating.
You suspect they have swallowed an object or a bone.
A persistent cough that does not respond to the usual treatment.
Persistent sneezing or discharge from just one nostril.

Frequently asked questions
Is it the same as surgery?
No, and that is its main advantage. Endoscopy goes in through a natural opening, so there is no incision and no stitches, recovery is much faster, and in many cases it avoids abdominal surgery. It does require anaesthesia, because the animal must stay completely still.
When is it recommended over other tests?
When blood work and imaging have not given an answer, or when the lining needs to be seen directly and a biopsy taken from the exact spot. Where a swallowed foreign body is suspected, it is usually the first option.
Who performs the endoscopy?
Joan Quesada, who comes to Badavet to carry out the examination at the clinic itself, with the clinic team handling preparation and follow-up.
