Why the carrier causes so much stress
If it only appears right before a vet visit, the cat quickly learns to associate it with something unpleasant. The good news is that this association can be changed with consistency, without rushing.
Introducing it gradually
- Leave the carrier out and open at home, not just on travel day.
- Place a blanket or item with their scent inside.
- Put treats or part of their food nearby, then inside, so they go in on their own initiative.
- Let them go in and out freely, without closing the door at first.
- Associate it with calm moments too: a nap, a bit of playtime nearby.
On travel day
If they’re already used to it, the carrier itself conveys more calm. Carry it carefully, avoiding sudden movements, and partly cover it with a cloth if the cat gets unsettled by the visual stimulation of the journey.
What to avoid
Avoid forcing them in or chasing them around the house to catch them: it reinforces fear rather than reducing it. It’s also not a good idea to resort to sedation without explicit veterinary guidance — talk to the clinic beforehand if the stress is very intense.
